Procedure for the acquisition and renewal of convention travel documents for recognised refugees
  • For the acquisition or renewal of convention travel documents to recognised refugees and to their family members who are also recognized as refugees, an application (MTD—IPA2) along with all the required supporting documents must be submitted to the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia.   • For the application submission, the amount for applicable fees shall be paid as stated below.
  • For the issuance of the biometric travel document capturing of biometric data (photo and fingerprints) and signature of the refugee is necessary, which is done with the presentation of the application submission receipt and a valid identity document. The biometric data can be captured at the same time or after the application submission, at the offices of the Department in Nicosia or the district unit of the Aliens and Immigration Unit of the Police of the district of residence of the third country national. For persons who have not reached the age of six years at the time of applying only the photo is captured. This data is also captured for the renewal of the temporary residence permit.
  • Applications that are not accompanied by all the required documents will not be accepted for consideration.
  • Any change in the applicant's data during the examination of the application should be notified immediately to the Department.
  • In case the application is approved, the applicant will receive a letter notifying them of how to receive their travel document.
  • In case the application is rejected, the applicant will receive a letter informing them of the rejection reasons.
  • If your travel document  is lost or stolen you must immediately report this to your nearest police station and you must make an Affidavit in any Court and submit both documents with your application.
  • In case the application is submitted for a minor it must be completed and signed by both parents/guardians before the receiving officer. If one of the parents/guardians is abroad, the application must be completed and signed by the parent/guardian in the Republic and must be accompanied by the written consent of the parent/guardian abroad, that he/she consents to the issuance of the minor's identity card. This consent must be certified before a Consular officer at a Consular Authority of the Republic. If one of the two parents/guardians holds the right of the sole parental responsibility of the minor, the relevant application must be submitted along with the relevant family Court Order.
Fees
Issuance or renewal of convention travel document: €70
Additional fee for accelerated issuance: €50
Travel Document replacement due to loss, damage, or theft: Double the foreseen fees (1st time) and double the previous time for each subsequent time.

Issuance and receipt of passports
  • All passports are issued at the Central Offices of the Department in Nicosia
  • All travel documents are usually issued no later than 10 calendar days from the date of application.
  • Passports under the accelerated procedure are issued in priority and usually within two workdays from the date of application.
Passport validity
The validity of travel documents is 5 years for adults and minors.

Important Information
Convention Travel Document allows you to enter a foreign country for a specific period. The only limitation to the areas of travel is the country of origin of the refugee. All persons with a Convention Travel Document should check with the relevant Embassies or Consulates prior to travel for any visas required, including transit visas. All persons should also check and abide by the conditions of entry.
